The Gluten Free Epicurean, owned and operated by Delainy, has kindly hosted our Vancouver Support Group for the past four years. As they usually close by 6:00 pm, this has meant staffing the restaurant and staying open for us until 8:00 pm on the second Thursday of each month.
The venue is quaint with a loft like feel, white tables and chairs, a collection of mismatched china to serve their scrumptious delights on and a casual and friendly atmosphere. It is a real pleasure to go there and not have to be worried about the cross contamination from gluten. For those with other food sensitivities, the staff are knowledgeable regarding the ingredients and can let you know what is also dairy free and vegan. The best of ingredients go into their food. I especially like the organic chicken pot pies, cinnamon buns, beer batter mix and pie crust mix. Many of the support group attendees look forward to having a piece of gluten-free pizza or a quiche, if available. Items are baked freshly on site daily, and frozen take and bake items and mixes are also available. Pizza and sandwiches are available every day and lunches can be enjoyed on the weekends. Cakes and cupcakes are available by special order. Take a look at their Facebook page for what else is available at THE-GLUTEN-FREE-EPICUREAN .
Delainy has celiac disease herself. Her mother and Aunt have passed away and also had Celiac Disease. Her brother has also been diagnosed, so the quest for good food gluten free foods was always there. She really wanted to provide gluten intolerant people with fresh baked goods every day. There were a lot of packaged product available, but not a lot of freshly baked goods.
Delainy opened her business seven years ago (updated in 2018) on December 28th . Given the failure rate of small businesses and gluten-free businesses, she has been very successful. There have been many challenges along the way…..however, she says that is how we grow. Every day she learns something new about business, people and life.
Her business evolved through a nice slow progression. This is what was needed “as it was just me…. now it is so busy, we have a difficult time keeping up. Please be gentle with my staff ….. they work really hard. We cannot really add anymore products without removing others, as we are out of space now.” The Gluten Free Epicurean goods are also sold in about 10 cafes around Vancouver.
Customers’ needs have changed over the five years of operation. There is significantly more knowledge about gluten free. People are looking for simple lifestyle changes not just because they have to. Delainy listens to her customers and tries to meet their needs. More allergies and sensitivities have come up since she opened. Delainy has slowly eliminated allergens as needed to meet this demand. The Gluten Free Epicurean is located at 633 East 15th Ave in Vancouver. They are closed on Mondays. Come and enjoy the luxury of no worries about cross contamination and have a cookie….they are to die for!
